The state of the churches on the Isle of Man

It is now 2 years since this report was done and it has not come before Tynwald yet.

The Bishop - who is not elected by anybody - has a vote in who will be the next Chief Minister of the Isle of Man. Why?

Prayers in Tynwald

The chaplain or the lord bishop lead members of Tynwald and the House of Keys in Christian prayer before every sitting.

This confusion of church and state seems rather outdated in the 21st century. Maybe those members of Tynwald who have religious beliefs could pray privately before the politics of Tynwald commence.

The Lord Bishop of Sodor and Man in Tynwald

The Lord Bishop is not elected to Tynwald by the people of the Isle of Man. His fellow bishops do not elect him. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appoints him. And yet he has a vote in Tynwald.

The island has not declined into moral decay because there is no bishop in Tynwald at the moment.

Civil Partnership Bill

This has not yet come to Tynwald. It will bring the island into line with other places where civil partnership are already permitted.
