Churches, Adoption and Issues of Conscience
The UK media recently carried news of fresh attempts by the Catholic Church, supported by other faith organisations, to opt out of the normal legal obligation of all decent people not to discriminate against others. A recent campaign against certain adoptions on 'conscience' grounds follows a series which has involved (amongst others in the public or private sector), 'Christian' doctors, police officers, pharmacists, hotel owners, schools and civil registrars all trying to avoid doing their duty when asked to deal with selected minority groups.
George Broadhead, the Manx-born Secretary of the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association, made a few pertinent comments to the press.
